Will My Infection Go Away With Antibiotics?

We are all so busy these days, so it can be especially frustrating when you are going about your day and start to feel sick. Being sick can make it hard to go about your day-to-day life and keep your household running smoothly, so seeking relief or encouragement is probably in the forefront of your mind.

At this time of year, viral infections are common and relatively widespread, so chances are that you are suffering from a simple infection! Check out our blog all about infections below, shared by the AFC Urgent Care NC team.

How Did I Get Sick in the First Place?

In the fall and winter, being exposed to a virus can happen virtually anywhere. Since they can be so contagious, even something as simple as touching a germy doorknob can infect you and cause your symptoms to appear in a few days. Other common forms of transmission are through contact with infected people or being the unfortunate recipient of an uncovered cough or sneeze.

Viral infections at this time of year include the common cold and influenza. Bacterial infections can also spike at this time, too, like strep throat. It can be hard to distinguish what you are suffering from on your own since many infections share similar symptoms.

Symptoms of a General Infection

  • Coughing
  • Runny nose or congestion
  • Fever
  • Sore throat

What Is the Treatment for an Infection?

Bacterial infections can usually be wiped out in a matter of days with a round of antibiotics, so if you receive a prescription for your illness, it is important to take the entire dosage. Not doing so can make your infection come back or you can continue to spread the bacteria to someone else.

Viral infections unfortunately do not respond to antibiotics, so the best course of treatment usually centers around managing symptoms until you overcome the infection on your own. That is why it is important to be evaluated by a medical professional! Taking antibiotics for a viral infection won’t help you and can actually cause side effects or contribute to antibiotic resistance.

  • Avoid people who are sick.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze.
  • Stay up to date on the recommended vaccination schedule
