Why Do We Get Heat Rash?

As the weather starts to warm up and temperatures climb, the likelihood of getting a heat rash becomes greater and greater. We all know that heat rash is a thing, but it’s possible that not too many of us have ever actually experienced one.

So, how does heat rash even happen? Our AFC Urgent Care NC team has some answers.

What Causes a Heat Rash?

With many children heading off to local summer and sports camps, it’s important to know what heat rash is and what causes it. Heat rash affects both children and adults and happens when the pores become blocked and sweat can’t escape.

Heat rash is most often caused by friction on the surface of the skin and is usually self-diagnosable. Adults and teens usually develop heat rash on the parts of their bodies that rub together, such as between the inner thighs or under the arms. Babies usually develop heat rash under skin folds, such as those of the armpits, elbows, and thighs. We’ve listed some common heat rash symptoms below.

Symptoms of Heat Rash

How Can I Prevent Heat Rash?

Heat rash is a very preventable rash type. But if you or your child do get it, it will usually resolve itself in just a few days for most.

We’ve listed some effective prevention tactics below.

Ways to Prevent Heat Rash

  • Avoid wearing tight clothing that doesn’t allow your skin to breathe. Moisture-wicking fabrics help prevent sweat buildup on the skin.
  • Don’t use thick lotions or creams that can clog your pores.
  • Try not to become overheated, especially in warmer months. Seek out air-conditioning.
  • Use a soap that won’t dry your skin and doesn’t have fragrances or dyes.
