Where Do I Go When I Have a Sore Throat?
Did you know that more than 3 million cases of strep throat are diagnosed each year among Americans? That’s a lot of sore throats!
Fortunately, a sore throat doesn’t always have to mean strep. Our team at AFC Urgent Care TN wants to share some insight into the causes of sore throats and when to seek medical attention.
What Is a Sore Throat?
When you experience any type of pain in the throat, it is known as a “sore throat.”
However, when you have strep throat, you usually also have a variety of other symptoms, including fever, fatigue, chills, white spots on the throat, headache and/or trouble swallowing.
Other Causes of a Sore Throat
- Acid reflux
- Bacterial infection
When Should I See a Doctor?
While many sore throats might go away after a few days with some home remedies, such as throat lozenges and hot tea with honey, in some cases your sore throat may need medical attention.
If you have been suffering from a sore throat for a few days without relief, or if your sore throat now includes other symptoms like a fever or loss of appetite, visit a physician as soon as possible for medical care.
Treatment for a Sore Throat
- Nasal washing
- Throat lozenges
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications
