When Can I Take an Antibiotic for My Sickness?
Feeling under the weather? While you might think you just need to take an antibiotic to feel better, that’s not always the case.
Read on as our team at AFC Urgent Care TN shares some insight about the topic.
Can I Take an Antibiotic for an Infection?
That depends on the type of your illness. If you are diagnosed with a bacterial infection, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic, which has been shown as an effective treatment.
However, if you are diagnosed with a viral infection, or virus, antibiotics are not an effective option.
Bacterial Infection Cases
- Some sinus and respiratory infections
- Skin infection
- Meningitis
- Urinary tract infections
What Can I Do for a Viral Infection
If you’re diagnosed with a virus, such as the common cold or the flu, your best option is usually just to ride out the illness. An antibiotic won’t be effective and can actually cause more harm than good.
But there are things you can do to treat the symptoms.
Treatment for a Viral Infection
- Gargle warm salt water for a sore throat.
- Take an over-the-counter medication for pain and/or fever.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Use a humidifier for congestion.
