What Could Be Causing My Insomnia?

Sleep is an extremely important part of living an overall healthy life. During sleep, our bodies are able to restore themselves and to repair tissues, muscles and synthesized hormones in order to continue to be healthy and strong. However, when we do not get the sleep we need, we can put ourself at risk for a number of health issues, such as heartburn, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, mental health problems and respiratory problems.

There are different variations of insomnia. For instance, some people might have insomnia where they have trouble falling asleep, while other people wake up often throughout the night and are unable to get themselves back to sleep. Stress, anxiety and depression are some of the most common causes of people experiencing insomnia.

What Can I Do to Try and Prevent Insomnia?

In order to prevent insomnia, you want to establish a proper sleep routine in order to set yourself up for success for a good night’s sleep. Start by trying to go to bed and wake up at the same times each day, including the weekend. By being consistent, you can set your body on a clock to where it knows that it is time to be awake and time to be asleep.

You might also want to try to relax an hour or two before bedtime by reading a book, taking a warm bath and/or practice mindful meditation. However, you should be careful about what you eat close to bedtime, as certain foods can contribute to insomnia.
