Summer Workout 101 | AFC Urgent Care of East Tennessee

The team at AFC Urgent Care TN is happy that you are looking to improve your workout routine in order to live a healthier life. However, when taking your exercise routine outdoors, it’s important you make sure your summer workout is safe!

Be Safe Out There

The first thing you want to make sure you bring with you for your workout is water. This is an important habit to establish no matter where you’re working out, or what the activity is. You should be drinking a good amount of water before, during and after your workout. It’s best to drink plain water unless you’re doing strenuous exercise for longer than 60 minutes, in which case a low-calorie electrolyte-replenishing drink should do the trick.

In addition to drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated, you also want to make sure you’re fueling your body correctly throughout the day. Fill your plate with plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. You can even increase your hydration by eating water-filled fruits and vegetables, like cucumbers, peppers, berries and melon.

Second, you’ll want to plan your workout to avoid the hottest parts of the day, which are between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Aim to get in a workout in the early morning or late afternoon/evening, so that you can avoid the hot, intense rays of the sun as much as possible.

Finally, you want to make sure you wear the appropriate clothing when working out. Rather than wearing dark, tight clothing, choose loose-fitting clothing in light colors. The layer of clothing against your skin, including your socks, should be sweat-wicking. If you’re exercising outdoors when it’s dark or rainy, be sure you’re also wearing reflective clothing that’s easy to see.
