How Long Does the Flu Last?
There are many different ways you can get sick at this time of year. With COVID-19, RSV and the flu all circulating about, it can feel overwhelming to try to stay healthy. Even if you do everything you can to avoid illness, it is still possible to get sick.
We are sorry if you are feeling ill! Influenza is a really common respiratory virus that will typically run its course in about a week or so. In the meantime, our AFC Urgent Care TN team offers some tips on managing your flu symptoms below, so read on.
Where Did I Get the Flu?
Since influenza cases are so apparent in Tennessee right now, you could have gotten it from a variety of sources. Uncovered coughs, sneezes or contact with infected people are among the most common ways to become infected yourself.
If you start to feel minor symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat or mild cough, it’s time to head for home. Influenza can start out with minor symptoms similar to the common cold, but it can quickly make you feel miserable once the infection starts to set in. Go home and get plenty of rest!
Flu Symptoms to Look Out for
- Fever
- Runny nose/congestion
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Muscle or body aches
What Should I Do for the Flu?
If you are experiencing mild to moderate symptoms, the best way to combat influenza is to just take it easy for a few days and rest as much as possible. Drink plenty of water and eat foods that are healthy and easy to digest. You can also take OTC medications to minimize any particularly unpleasant symptoms you are experiencing.
If you are age 65 or older or if your young child is the one with the flu diagnosis, keep a close eye on any symptom progression. Influenza tends to cause more serious complications in the older and younger populations, so seek medical attention for chest pain or trouble breathing.
Tips to Ease Flu Symptoms
- Drink plenty of fluids like water or broth.
- Avoid hard-to-digest foods like heavy grains or greasy foods.
- Take pain relievers for a sore throat or body aches.
- Try a saline nasal spray for nasal congestion.
