How Can I Reduce Sciatica Pain Quickly?

If you have had sciatica before, even thinking about the pain and discomfort can produce unpleasant memories! The burning, sharp shooting pain from your back down into one of your legs is enough to stop anyone in their tracks.

The good news is that the flare-up most likely will go away within a week or two, but that can seem like a long time when you are in pain. Our AFC Urgent Care NC team offers some simple pain-reducing tips below!

How Do You Get Sciatica?

When you have sciatica, something has compressed or pinched your sciatic nerve. Most commonly it is due to a herniated or slipped disk or an overgrown bone spur. Whatever the cause, sciatic pain can be intense.

Even though it might sound unpleasant, you are actually encouraged to keep exercising through the discomfort! Exercising your body can help relieve some of the pressure and keep your joints moving. It is also important to adjust your posture and stand up or go for walks often if you have a desk job.

Those at Higher Risk of Sciatica

  • Seniors
  • Those who are overweight or obese
  • People with office jobs or whom are sedentary often
  • Those who have diabetes

Is Stretching a Quick Fix for Sciatica?

Stretching is a great way to relieve some of the pressure causing sciatic pain. Start with the seated forward bend, where you sit down with your legs stretched out in front of you. Then you simply reach toward your toes. Another helpful stretch is the supine twist. On your back with your knees in your chest, put your arms out in a “T” shape and lower your bent knees to one side, lay your head down in the opposite direction. Repeat these stretches often.

Yoga is also a great way to alleviate pain and prevent this issue from happening again! It can pull pressure off your back and aid in your flexibility. Add in a few pigeon poses and cat-cows into your next flow routine.

Signs That You Need Medical Attention

  • You have sudden and severe pain in your low back
  • The pain follows a violent injury, like a car accident
  • You can no longer control your bladder or bowels
