Could My Pet Get COVID-19?

It’s rare, but it’s possible. Even though none of the reported cases of COVID-19 among animals have resulted in death, it’s still important to be careful around your fur-baby if you get sick with the coronavirus.

Read on as our team at AFC Urgent Care NC provides some helpful information on the pandemic and pets.

How Common Is COVID-19 Among Animals?

Not very common. There were reported instances at the beginning of the pandemic of two cats in New York contracting the virus, but they both made a full recovery.

The CDC has recently stated that a small number of pets have been confirmed to be infected with COVID-19, but only after close contact with an owner who also had COVID-19. They have also been able to be taken care of at home. If you contract the coronavirus, though, it’s important to limit your contact with your pet.

General Ways to Keep Your Pet Healthy

  • Take your dog on regular walks.
  • Play with your cat once a day.
  • Wash your hands before and after touching your animal.
  • Keep pet supplies out of your kitchen.

Should I Stay Away From My Pet If I Get COVID-19?

It’s better to do so. While the CDC is still learning about how the virus affects animals, the safest option is to limit your contact with all living things if you contract the virus.

If you’re sick with COVID-19 and you are worried about the health of your pet, don’t visit the vet in person. The CDC recommends calling your veterinarian first and telling him or her you are sick with COVID-19, as some veterinarians offer telemedicine consultations or other plans for seeing sick pets. Your veterinarian can evaluate your pet and decide the appropriate steps for your pet’s care.

Ways to Lessen Your Household’s COVID-19 Risk

  • Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly.
  • Sanitize frequently trafficked areas.
  • Disinfect packages.
  • Wash your clothes frequently.
  • Throw away take-out containers.
