Age Is Only a Number—Your Health Is What You Make of It | AFC Urgent Care of East Tennessee
In recognition of Healthy Aging Month this September, the team at AFC Urgent Care TN wants you to know that just because you put another candle on your birthday cake this year, that doesn’t mean that your health has to start on a downhill path. There are steps you can take to age gracefully!
Your Health Isn’t a Number. It’s How You Feel.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults need at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week. Whether you go for a brisk walk around the neighborhood or participate in your local gym’s aerobics class, it’s important to get your heart pumping on a daily basis.
Nutrition is another important component of aging gracefully—and doing so in a healthy way. No matter what your age, we all need to eat as healthfully as possible. It’s important to note that our nutritional needs change slightly as we age, but the basics of healthy eating do not.
For instance, you should still eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. According to the USDA Dietary Guidelines, adults should consume between 5 and 13 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. It doesn’t matter whether they’re fresh, frozen or canned—just be certain that if you choose canned or frozen, they don’t contain added sodium or sugar.
Finally, you never want to stop learning. Therefore, take up a new hobby or do something else that will help you to challenge your mind. Whether it’s learning to play a new instrument, picking up a new language or taking dance lessons, do something regularly that you’ve never done before.
